Mechanical advantage

Mechanical advantage is the ratio of applied force to force output by using a tool such as a lever or pulley. Mechanical advantage works because the applied work is equal to the work output. Since work is equal to force times distance, by increasing the distance over which the force is applied, one can decrease the force required.
